Manufacturer, region, dealership — three tiers, and the tier with the machines has no IT staff. That shapes access before anything else.

Automotive IT is structured differently from most industries: it is tiered.

Manufacturer headquarters, regions, then hundreds or thousands of dealerships — each tier owning its own equipment, and the dealership tier usually has no dedicated IT. That is why the first problem here is not connectivity but how access is divided.

First problem: three tiers of access

Putting every dealership machine in one flat list, separated by a naming convention, survives a few dozen sites. At a few hundred it breaks down — one region can see another’s machines, and after an incident nobody can say who did what.

Grouping plus group sharing is where this lands: a group per region or city, shared with the people who cover it. Headquarters sees everything, a region sees its own, a dealership sees only itself. Group sharing starts at the Team edition.

No IT on site, so unattended is required

The person at a dealership workstation is a salesperson or a service advisor, not a technician. Expecting them to follow steps — or to click Accept at the right moment — is not realistic.

Dealership endpoints should be configured for unattended access, reached directly from headquarters or the region. Audit then becomes mandatory rather than optional: with nobody on site to approve, “who connected to which machine and when” has to come entirely from the record. Setup is in unattended access.

Plant equipment is a different problem

If what you manage is production line equipment rather than dealership endpoints, the constraints change completely — the network is often isolated, the person on site is not an engineer. That is in remote diagnostics for equipment you ship.

One that is already running
